Nitin Sawhney @ Singapore Arts Fest 2010

Eonnagata, Singapore Arts Fest

Pardon the above mug shot, but Mr Nitin Sawhney and his band put up an amazing show last Friday. It ranks as one of the best concerts I have attended (right up there with past Esplanade Mosaic Festival performances from Brad Mehldau Trio and Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band).

When one thinks of the concept of "Fusion", the word "Kitsch" certainly comes in close association. "Kitsch" certainly does not describe the beautiful music from Nitin Sawhney's band of professional musicians. The band played meaningful music that touches today's issues of terrorism, urbanity and social identity.

Musically, the tabla player was smoking, the drummer had a delicate sense of time-keeping, the vocalists were smooth as honey... and all these varied strains held together by Nitin Sawhney's flamenco and Indian acoustic guitar licks.

The concert was a tapestry of the many musical influences in this man's life. Cross-cultural, spiritual and really beautiful music... bestowed upon us by these talented individuals.
